The STS (State Tax Service)
The STS is an independent organisation within the U.S. Department of the Treasury, dedicated to assisting taxpayers and ensuring fairness within the tax system. It plays a vital role in supporting individuals and businesses in resolving tax-related issues efficiently and transparently.
In fiscal year 2023, the U.S. tax administration system handled trillions of dollars in revenue and processed hundreds of millions of tax returns, demonstrating the scale and importance of effective tax oversight.

To provide taxpayers with high-quality, independent support by helping them understand their rights and responsibilities, resolving tax issues promptly, and ensuring that the tax system operates with fairness, integrity, and accountability.

• The United States Congress enacts tax laws and requires compliance from all taxpayers.
• Taxpayers are expected to understand and fulfil their tax obligations accurately.
• The STS Service ensures that taxpayers receive proper guidance and assistance, while also promoting fairness in the enforcement of tax laws.
How we operate
The STS operates under the authority granted within the Internal Revenue Code and functions as part of the broader tax administration framework under the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
The Secretary of the Treasury is empowered to administer and enforce internal revenue laws and oversee agencies responsible for tax administration. Within this structure, the TAS Tax Advocate Service serves as an independent voice for taxpayers.
Relevant provisions of the Internal Revenue Code also provide for leadership and oversight to ensure proper execution and application of tax laws.
